Shortly after we were married in 1978, along came Trapper, our first puppy; a Golden Retriever from a litter that Russell’s Dad’s dog, Bullet, had sired. First up on the agenda was enrolling Trapper in Four K’s Golden Obedience school. We both loved the training process so much, we went on to assist the Four K’s instructors with future classes. After Trapper, came Jesse, a rescue from the Waterville Humane Society; then along came Dillon, our first Four K’s Golden puppy. Russell trained Dillon for bird hunting and also put an AKC CD (Companion Dog) title on him. Over the years, we have also provided Puppy Petiquette, a combination of housebreaking, manners, socialization and obedience training, for Four K’s Kennels golden puppies and other owners and breeders. We’ve had several more Goldens over the years; Boomer, Logan, Franklin, Hannahbelle and in 2010 our first Golden Doodles, Barkley and EmmaJean.
In 1983, the owners of Four K’s decided to move south and asked us to take over instructing the Obedience Classes as the community had come to depend on this type of training being held at various times during the year. We held Good News Dog Obedience classes throughout Franklin County until we moved to Piscataquis County in 1996. Since then, we have held training classes at the Penquis Higher Education Center in Dover-Foxcroft, Greenville High School, and at Fresh Air Dogs, also our home, in Guilford. We also provide private training sessions at our home, or the dog’s home, wherever is deemed more appropriate for the needs of the dog and owner.
Our lifelong dream was to create a place where dogs could come and have fun and play, romp and run and enjoy being dogs. In August of 2009, we decided that Cynthia would hang up her Executive Director hat and open Fresh Air Dogs in 2010. We wanted Fresh Air Dogs to be a unique, dog-friendly place where dogs would be excited to visit and can’t wait to come back. We had often hired folks to come to our home to care for our dogs when we would be away and we often cared for friends and family member’s dogs so we knew there was a need for a place for dog-owners to take their dogs where the dog will continue to feel like they’re at home and the dog owners will not only not feel guilty leaving their dog, but feel really good about it! We believe we have achieved just that as the only thing dog owners have expressed concern about is that many times their dog doesn’t want to leave!
